In December 2022, Willem Sr delivered sand for a quay construction in Rostock (Germany).
The existing quay had been partly demolished by the contractor and a new sheet pile wall had been constructed in front of it. The Willem Sr then filled the space between the old quay and the new sheet pile wall with sand.
The sand was dredged a few nautical miles off the coast near Warnemünde by the Willem Sr, after which it sailed with a full hopper to the relevant unloading location in Rostock.
Filling the quay presented several challenges;
- The space where dumping could take place – between the old and new quay – was limited.
- In many places, sand had to be flushed up to 20 meters below the existing quay.
- The inner corner of the quay could not be reached with the barge loading arm.
A modification to the barge loading arm allowed the sand to be dumped with great precision and prevented the sand from being dumped on the existing quay or in the port. This adjustment also allowed the sand to be sprayed precisely into a funnel. This funnel was placed on drilled holes through which the sand was flushed under the existing quay.
The hard-to-reach inside corner had a larger dump location. This allowed this inner corner to be filled by rainbowing.
During the implementation of this project, there was constant close consultation between the executor and the ship. Together they came up with creative solutions so that pipes and landfill crew did not have to be deployed. This resulted in cost savings and time savings for the contractor! This allowed us to complete our part of this project well on time and to the contractor’s satisfaction.
